, but it does not have to be one. Some people get so discouraged when they try to quit smoking that they honestly start to believe that it is just not possible for them to quit. It is not gaining you anything at all to continue doing it and just think of the relief you will likely experience when you finally manage to quit. You do not have to invest in a lot of expensive pills, nicotine patches and gum to make yourself stop smoking, although some people do find these things helpful, the success ratio for using these products is not that great. Often smokers will find that stepping down gradually on their own is one of the best ways to go about it. It is much less painful than stopping cold turkey, but you have to set your goal for being quit and stick to the number of cigarettes you allow yourself everyday.
The most important thing to remember when you decide to stop smoking is that you should not give up. If you slip up and smoke too much in a day, start again the next day. You might do this quite a few times, but the key to quitting for good is to never give up trying. Every cigarette that you do not smoke is a step in the right direction and praise yourself well every time you are able to give up smoking one when you wanted it. When you overcome the desire to smoke one it will encourage you to give up the next one.
