Two Of The Biggest Social Media Sites

'Social Media' isn't just a buzz word

'Social Media' isn't just a buzz word. It's a firmly integrated part of the lives of millions of people all over the world. Whether for businesses, friends, networking or telling jokes, social media websites are proving phenomenally popular. But which are the biggest?

Well, there's really no foundation to dispute the fact that Facebook is the most popular. In fact, data shows that at the present time, July 2010, Facebook has more than 500 million registered users across the world. Many people compare Facebook to an electronic year book type platform. People register, create a profile with information and photographs of themselves. They can then link their profiles with those of the people they know and contact others either publicly or privately, through private messaging. Users upload images and play games too.

Without doubt, this is the site that really led to the mass population explosion of what is now referred to as Social Media. In recent months, however, the social media giant that is Facebook has come under mass scrutiny for its controversial privacy policy.

Twitter is the next site we will look at. This is a micro-blogging website, where users basically post very short messages or snippets of a maximum of 140 characters. As of July 2010, there are over 100 million registered users across the world. However, there is some debate about just how many of these users are active as there are a large number of dormant accounts. As well as that, there are a number of accounts that are automated, also known as 'Tweet bots.' Nonetheless, the site is incredibly popular with both casual users and businesses. It's being used frequently for networking and is proving a hit with a number of celebrities, who use the platform to communicate with fans.

The sites we've mentioned here are just two of literally hundreds out there. These are, though, absolutely the most talked about right now. Even if you are not a regular user yourself you are likely still to have heard of them. The Internet is also still growing massively and there are evermore homes getting online, making it a fair assumption that social media will continue to grow.
