It is a unique pattered fabric that can be machine-made or hand-made
. The fabric is manufactured by removing the cloths or threads from a fabric that had been woven previously. Threads are braided, looped and twisted to produce a lace. Though the craft of lace-making can be traced to the ancient times, proper laces started being manufactured from the late fifteenth and sixteenth century. Though originally, only gold, silver, silk and linen threads were used, cotton threads became commonly used later. Sometimes, silver and copper wires are also used as an alternative to threads.
SOME COMMON TYPES OF LACES
Cutwork also referred to as white-work, certain threads from a woven fabric are removed while the other threads are wrapped or embroidered.
Needle lace- they are made by using a thread and a needle. Thee laces are easiest to make and are also less time-consuming. Antique needle laces were manufactured from very fine threads which are not available today.
Knitted lace it is a lace shawl that is so fine that it can pass through a wedding ring.
Bobbin lace it is made with a pillow and bobbins. The bobbins (made from wood, plastic or bone) are used to hold the threads together by pins that are inserted in a way that they give the desired design on the pillow. The pillow contains different materials, like straw, ethafoam and insulation Styrofoam. They are also referred to as bone-lace.
Chemical lace designs are stitched in the desired place with embroidery threads. Later, the stitched areas are removed while the embroidery is allowed to remain in its place. The base on which the stitching is done is made from non heat-resistant or water-soluble material.
USES
