Types Of Dentures - The Difference Between Partial And Complete Dentures

Teeth replacements are often necessary if you have missing teeth due to injury

, decay or age. Many people believe that losing teeth is a normal part of aging, yet proper dental care and maintenance can help you keep your teeth forever. Dentures are usually used as a last resort if you need replacements but are not a good candidate for other methods, such as crowns or implants.

Getting used to wearing dentures can take several months, as they can affect the normal way you eat and speak. Fortunately, today's dentists can fit you with dentures that feel and look natural and healthy so that you can feel confident in your smile. If your dentures feel as though they are slipping or clicking, or if you experience gum irritation or notice an odor, you may need to speak to your dentist about denture repairs.

Depending on how many replacements you need, there are two types of dentures from which you can choose: full dentures and partial dentures.

Complete Dentures:

Custom-made to fit either your entire upper or lower jaw, complete dentures are placed directly on your gums and usually require several appointments. The process involves taking impressions of your mouth for a natural fit, as well as working with your dentist to choose a size, shape and color of teeth.

Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have already been removed. Once the gums have begun to heal, the dentures can be placed - usually about eight to 12 weeks after removal. This means that you will be without teeth during the healing process.

Immediate dentures are made before the teeth are removed and can be placed soon after removal. However, because the shape of your bones and gums are subject to change during the healing process, immediate dentures will need to be adjusted over time and are often only used as temporary solutions until conventional dentures can be placed.

Partial Dentures:

If you are only missing some of your teeth, you can be fitted for partial dentures, which can be either removable or fixed. Removable dentures include artificial teeth and gums on a metal framework that holds the dentures in place with metal clasps or other attachments. These dentures can be removed for easy cleaning.

Fixed partial dentures, or bridges, are cemented in the mouth and supported by remaining healthy teeth. Bridges often look more natural than removable dentures and are generally more expensive.
