There are a lot of baby carriers out there for parents to choose from. Not only is there a large amount of different brands, but there are actually different types of baby carriers that are available for parents to purchase as well. If you are in the market for a baby carrier, then you will want to consider the different types of carriers there are and see which type is best for you.

Front Carriers

The front carrier holds your baby against your chest in the upright position. Smaller infants will face towards their parents chest while older infants who can hold up their own head can face outwards toward the world. These front carriers are soft and made of fabric. They have straps that hold the carrier to the parent's body and small leg holes for your baby to "sit" into the carrier. These make carrying your child easier because they free your arms and hands to do other things while still keeping your baby close to you. Some popular front carrier brands are Bjorn, Ergo Baby and Maclaren.

Hip Carriers

A hip carrier is a cross between the front carrier and a sling carrier. These have adjustable straps just like the front carriers, but instead of your baby being against your chest, they are against your hip. Your baby will still face toward you in a hip carrier, but instead of having to use your hands or arms to keep them on your hip, the carrier does that work for you. There are some pros and cons to the hip carriers, however. Some pros are that they free up your hands and keep your baby close to you, but many parents find that having their baby strapped to their hip can be a lot of pressure on one side of their body. There are a lot of infants that also do not like to be kept in the upright position as well.

Sling Carriers

Sling carriers are popular amongst mothers, but typically avoided by professionals. This is simply due to the fact that sling carriers are a long strip of fabric that a mother will wear over one shoulder and their waist. They will then lay their baby inside the sling and give them a "nest-like" environment. With infants, they must be worn in front with sling carriers; where as older infants can be held on the side. The sling leaves your baby in a reclining position, which is what many babies prefer not to be in. It is important to also know that there are potential suffocation risks with using a sling due to the cramped environment. Consult a physician prior to purchasing and using a sling with your baby.

There are a lot of brands that carry all three or just a few of these types of carriers. Always consult your physician on the type of carrier they recommend as well as do what works for you and your baby. Seek out brands such as Ergo Baby or Maclaren for brands that have been around and produced a long line of quality baby carriers. Never purchase your baby carrier secondhand due to safety recalls that can happen on older models.
