Ufc 150: bendo Does Enough To Retain The Title
In a decision that left some scratching their heads Saturday night
. Benson Henderson splits the scorecards to retain his lightweight title in a thriller line-up. Frankie Edgar said he was going to Denver to get his lightweight title back.
But Edgar fell slightly short to Benson Henderson again in a close battle that had one judge giving Frankie the edge. The three cage side judges in Pepsi Center scored the bout 48-47 twice for Henderson, and 49-46 for Frankie Edgar.
Oddly this was the third consecutive rematch for Frankie Edgar (14-3-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC), who lost the title to Benson Henderson (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in February at UFC 144 in Japan. Edgar was granted Saturdays rematch largely based on him giving up rematches to B.J. Penn and Gray Maynard in title fights in 2010 and 2011. It was a whats fair, is fair decision for the most part.
For scoring, Saturdays main event featured a razor thin third, fourth and fifth rounds, the third being a coin flip of a round. Benson Henderson said he didnt understand the one judge who scored the fight four rounds to one for Edgar, the former champ. I was a little confused with the scoring on that one 49-46 was a little weird, Said Henderson. But the judge had a perfect view. He was up close, so it is what it is. You always have to be concerned whenever it goes to a decision.
The fan favorite and very disappointed Edgar, listened as fans in Denver were still booing the decision, said he believed he had done enough to win the fight. I thought I had it, but congrats to Ben, said Edgar. I dont know if Im going to watch that fight. Im upset. Im upset, but what are you going to do? I did (think I won). I thought I brought it to him.
The last few weeks leading up to the fight, UFC President Dana White said regardless of the outcome, the loser would not be granted a rematch. Whites lightweight division has essentially been three fights, each one with title-fight rematches for the past 28 months. This division is to talent-rich to continue doing this type of format.
Benson Henderson worked leg kicks early against Frankie Edgar, chopping away at his lead leg, trying to kick it out from under him. At the end of the first round, Edgar found himself in a guillotine choke, but survived the frame. This clearly was Hendersons round.
As the fight progressed, though, in typical fashion, Edgar seemed to find increased success in the standup game, and even landed a big right that knocked Henderson on his wallet. Edgar had a couple takedowns and a pair of submission attempts in the fight, but only 3 and a half minutes of the bout was fought on the canvas. In the standup game, Henderson landed more strikes; but the key question for the judges had to be who landed the more significant blows.
At the end of the match the cards read, two of the three believed it was the champion. Frankies tough, said Henderson. We all know how tough Frankie is. He always brings it.
