Uk Plastic Surgeons Perform More Moob Reductions In 2009
Men might not complain about their looks or ask if their butt looks big
, but it does bother. And, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), more are doing something about it despite the tough economic times created by the recession. In all, plastic surgeons have performed 581 gynaecomastia procedures in 2009, for an 80% increase. Also known as male breast reduction, gynaecomastia has become the third most popular procedure for men.
Male patients develop breasts, also called moobs or man-boobs, because of genetics, medical problems, certain medications, obesity, dieting, or age. They find them very difficult to get rid of, and even with help from a cosmetic surgery clinic, they often only have two options.
Liposuction is one possible medical solution. Here, plastic surgeons use special tools to suck fatty tissue through a small incision from underneath the breast tissue. This leaves the skin smooth, flat, and in a normal shape with little to no scarring. However, this procedure isn't always the best option. In this instance, plastic surgeons use an incision around the nipple or along the base to remove the excess breast tissue.
After both procedures, patients need to wear a special garment and note some pain, but they found this was all quite manageable with the help of some pain medications. Plastic surgery patients also experienced bruising, aching, and swelling, but found this eased after a few weeks leaving behind great results.
UK Men and Women Undergo More Plastic Surgery Procedures Overall
Britons from all walks of life were having plastic surgery procedures. The top five surgeries for men are rhinoplasty (nose jobs), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), breast reduction surgery, otoplasty (ear surgery), and liposuction. For women, the top five are breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, and face / neck lifts followed closely by tummy tucks in fifth place.
In all, UK plastic surgeons performed 6.7% more procedures in 2009, which adds up to 36,482 procedures in all. And while many surgeries increased, some were negatively affected. Female facelifts, for example, fell by 8%, but brow lifts increased by 43% while nose jobs increased by 25% and eyelid surgery jumped by 6%. UK plastic surgeons feel the reason for this is that patients are being more selective and choosing cheaper options.
