Ulm And Delta College Partner To Address State Shortage
A recent article in the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report outlined a partnership
between ULM and Delta on a nursing program designed to meet a need in the State of Louisiana. Here is an excerpt from the piece:
The University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana Delta Community College have signed a new partnership agreement in an effort to address the state's nursing shortage. ULM President Nick Bruno and Delta Chancellor Luke Robins signed an articulation agreement Monday that is to create a smooth transition for students who have earned their associate of science degree in nursing at Delta in two years and want to earn their bachelor of science degree in nursing at ULM after two more years.
"The shortage of health science professionals in the region is being addressed by agreements such as this and allows Delta students, as well as ULM students, to advance in these professions and thereby help the region," Bruno says. Emily Doughty, interim director of the School of Nursing at ULM, says the registered nurse to bachelor of science nursing program is completely online and will assist the graduates from Delta as they enter the next phase of their nursing education. She says the geriatric population is growing as the baby boomers age, causing a higher demand for qualified health care professionals. Read more
Immediately following was a response from Delta Colleges Billy Clark:
Although I applaud the agreement between ULM and Louisiana Delta Community College in Monroe, I do not understand how the agreement will help address a nursing shortage. The agreement allows RNs with an associate degree to enter the bachelor degree RN program at ULM. So the agreement allows one who is already an RN to stay in school for two more years to earn a higher credential, yet still be an RN. Seems to me that taking an RN from the employment pool and putting them into additional education for two years actually reduces the number of RNs available for employment.
What is really needed is for the Louisiana Board of Nursing to be more receptive of opportunities to train additional nurses. There is no shortage of qualified prospective nursing students, but rather a shortage of educational opportunity for those deserving students. And as long as we continue to do things the way weve always done them, we will continue to get the same results a nursing shortage, with many qualified nursing student applicants being denied opportunity due to an artificially-created lack of educational space.
At Delta, we are ready and prepared to help meet the challenge of the RN shortage. We are doing so with the LPN profession, and we can do it with the RN profession if given the opportunity. We plan to bring our proposal to the LSBN soon and hope they will allow us to be a part of the solution to Louisianas nursing shortage.
Delta College is dedicated to providing the finest of career training to all students throughout Louisiana. We enable our students to grow both personally and professionally with confidence, knowing they are well versed in their related fields of study.
