Patients who are considering plastic surgery should be aware that in the Philippines, it is legal for any physician who is not a plastic surgeon to perform cosmetic surgery. Once a doctor gets his/her medical degrees, they can practice any specialty, even if they have not completed their advanced training in the chosen field. And so, a doctor who usually performs cosmetic plastic surgery may not be necessarily as trained as a plastic surgeon.

Many documentaries and stories have been made which show us about all those plastic surgeries which went terribly wrong, and in most of the cases these procedures were performed by unskilled and unqualified surgeon. So, choosing the right surgeon for your plastic surgery is the only important decision that you need to take. The primary difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon is the training that they all have undergone.

To become a plastic surgeon and to use the title of "Plastic Surgeon" for clinical practice, a doctor must have a proper license to practice medicine and also he/she must have undergone at least five years of formal residency training in the field of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. This includes minimum three years of general surgery residency training and minimum two years of plastic surgery residency. Doctors who have completed all these residency training programs can rightfully claim themselves to be plastic surgeons. Therefore, a fully trained plastic surgeon can use any or even all of the following titles: Plastic Surgeon, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon, Facial Plastic Surgeon, Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon, Aesthetic Surgeon and Cosmetic Surgeon

On the other hand, a cosmetic or aesthetic surgeon is a doctor who can only perform cosmetic surgery procedures, regardless of all the training they have received. Thus, the use of the titles like "Cosmetic Surgeon" or "Aesthetic Surgeon" may mean several different things. So, the patient must inquire about the training of the doctor before choosing the right surgeon for their surgery.
