Understanding Edge Preparation

A tool, however, that's made of carbide requires a filament that exceeds the carbide in hardness. Some of these materials may include cubic boron nitride or even diamond. An effective edge prep system is typically designed for the finishing of not only carbide tools but also actual polycrystalline diamond tools.

An operator of an edge prep system must keep in mind various factors when performing the operation that includes the speed that the filament buffers the tool, the length of the cycle and the depth of engagement. These settings often vary depending on the type of task that's being performed, and the operator must be aware of proper steps required for different types of tools, and what sort of abrasive grains best match the material. For instance, a ceramic grain has application only with a select variety of materials and types of tools.

The advantage to using an edge prep system is manifold. A company that requires precise engineering of components and electronics requires tools that are reliable and will not break down. The replacement of parts can be an expensive endeavor, and tools that are not being finished regularly have shorter life expectancies. In order to hone tools, an edge prep device is required, and these can be accessed either through outright purchasing the device or by going through a manufacturer for honing services. By keeping tools well maintained, it's possible to gain as much life as possible out of them and therefore enhance the overall performance of a company and save on replacement costs.
