Understanding Lasik Eye Surgery The Abcs Of Laser Vision Correction
A lot of people hear about LASIK eye surgery these days
. They are aware of what it means; it is a corrective surgery used to improve or eliminate many eye problems. However, that is generally the extent of their knowledge. For anyone considering LASIK eye surgery, understanding what the process is about can make you feel more at ease and informed about what will happen when you are in the hands of the eye doctor.
LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Though it can sound a bit intimidating, it is actually a very specialized process that can greatly reduce a persons need for glasses or contacts. There are several vision problems that LASIK can improve: myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The corrective surgery is used to actually reshape the cornea, thus improving vision depending upon your eye problems.
Doctors can use either a laser keratome, which is a laser device, or a mechanical microkeratome, which is a blade-like device. Either of these can be used in LASIK surgery for the same end. A small flap is cut in the cornea where the doctor can then get to the stoma. This is the middle section of the cornea and where the corrections occur. A computer-controlled laser is carefully positioned over the eye, and using brief pulses, the laser actually vaporizes certain parts of the stoma. By removing these parts, the cornea takes on a different shape, allowing the patient to see through eyes with far less nearsightedness, farsightedness, or other typical vision issues than before.
Once the cornea is reshaped, the flap cut into cornea is replaced and your LASIK eye surgery is over. This type of corrective surgery is relatively quick, often taking less than 30 minutes. Patients will need to wear an eye shield in order to keep the flap in place since no stitches are used in the process. By keeping the eye protected, the cornea can fully heal and you will have better vision than ever before and be free of your past eye problems.
