Understanding Students Avoiding Yearbook Pictures
Regardless of what school you may attend, it's common that there are going to be
students that are going to avoid picture day so that they won't be in any yearbook pictures. Even though it is easily understood that students become nervous or self-conscious about their photos, it should not be common for students to avoid getting their pictures taken so often. The student is generally just robbing themselves of many unique experiences that they could look back on when they are older.
Generally students are not pleased with having to take their yearbook photos. Some students have issues with it because they just don't like to have their picture taken in any situation. But there are also students who avoid the picture day because they do not feel confident enough about their general appearance and do not have enough self-esteem.
There is no reason to be embarrassed about how you look. You should never compare yourself to another student, because you should embrace all of the differences that make you a unique individual. Likewise, the student that you are comparing yourself to might be nervous and stressed about their self-esteem as well.
Nerds or goths that are bullied at school for their appearance will not want to take pictures on picture day because it will be another opportunity for them to be made fun of at school. Because they are already teased, they do not want to create more opportunities for the bullying to occur. This happens to anyone who is being harassed at school for how they look physically.
Alternatively some people avoid picture day because they want to rebel against the rules of the school. If there is a school code that dictates what they should and should not wear in the photo, the student may want to avoid showing up for the picture day in order to protest the dress code. There are endless reasons that students do not want to participate in yearbook pictures.
Yet when the student is older, they will find many moments where they will wish that they were in the yearbook. They might wish they had yearbook photos that they could share with their friends or family when school is mentioned, for example. Eventually they might have children and wish that they had a yearbook picture to show them as well.
You should never assume that your pictures are going to automatically be unattractive when you are included in the yearbook. You are attending school and learning, so there is no reason to be ashamed. Regardless of if you are a nerd or a popular person in your school, having your picture taken for the yearbook isn't going to be a bad experience.
Instead, students should be willing to give their yearbook pictures another chance. If they would do this, they would realize that it can be convenient, quick, and over with even sooner if they are willing to cooperate.
