Following the current teaching trends, the running theory is that
, for learning to be effective, student accomplishments or milestones must be recognised and complimented. Educational institutions invest heavily on instructional materials that bring learning to its maximum, including materials used to motivate the students. And while there are many ways to recognise and compliment the efforts of the students, giving teacher stickers, primary certificates and attendance certificates is perhaps the most common and preferred method used by teachers in grade school.
This, however, must not be overdone. Doing so will only defeats the purpose and depletes the emphasis of giving rewards to good-performing students. Instead of improving the learning experience of the student, it can backfire and make the student lose interest eventually. Therefore, it is only proper that a teacher use benchmarks to determine whether or not it is time to give out stickers for an accomplishment. The following benchmarks for performing decently in terms of attendance, assignments, academics and extracurricular activities are definitely useful for teachers.
Attendance
Attendance is the first benchmark. There are students, as few as they are who complete the school year with a perfect attendance. They come to school no matter the weather, no matter how sick they feel. Attendance certificates may just be the thing that will convey the teachers appreciation to the students.
It is also true that there are students, though very diligent in school, who still cannot attend daily because of certain special circumstances. It is up to the teacher whether or not to issue a certificate after a thorough assessment of the circumstances of the students which lead to their absences. The certificate is not for perfect attendance but for their efforts to show diligence in school.
Assignments
Homework is a little bit tricky. However, rewarding students who continuously do their assignments pays off in the long run. A sticker that says Excellent can be placed on a homework that got a perfect score. A little improvisation on the rewards should do the job. Because there are many types of stickers, the teacher can choose easily which a sticker should go for which type of assignment.
Stickers on student homework are proven to be effective by education experts. Teacher stickers not only motivate the child to do schoolwork even while they are already at home. There is more to it. If a child does his homework, the learning process becomes easier and the learning curve becomes faster.
Academic Performance
Academic performance is perhaps the most common benchmark a teacher can use when giving out recognition awards to students. Experts say that if learning is to be measured, the rate of growth is one of the most important indicators of progress. When such growth is recognised and rewarded, the learning experience grows even more.
Stickers or certificates should be given in case specific conditions are met. For example, stickers can be used on the exam papers returned to the students while certificates can be used to give recognition to those who have performed well for the whole school year. Primary certificates, if given to students that show great academic performance, can increase the competition in the learning environment.
Extracurricular Activities
Extra-curricular activities include memberships in student organisations, clubs and other interest groups. It also includes activities outside the school, be it local, national or international. Participating in such events bring honour to both the school and the student. That easily translates to pride. And pride, quite apparently, is one of the greatest motivations there could ever be.
Some educational institutions have their own achievement benchmarks for teachers to follow in assessing their students performance in school. In fact, many schools already give
attendance certificates to students by default. Following the four indications given above, teachers can even create their own benchmarks to decide when or when not to give
primary certificates to children. These will help teachers decide whether simple
teacher stickers are enough, or the achievement of the student really did deserve a better certificate. There is more to it that teachers can explore when deciding to give rewards to students. These four indicators are perfect to start with for any school system looking for a way to build in a reward system for their students.
