Understanding The Alaska Grayling
When one thinks of fishing in Alaska, the great King salmon generally comes to mind

The grayling, or Thymallus thymallus, is one of many of the species available in Alaska. The grayling is a freshwater fish from the salmon family.
The grayling is smaller than the King salmon with a maximum 24 inch length. The largest grayling recorded weighed 15 pounds.
Although the grayling is very similar to other species in the grayling family, it is distinguished by five to eight dorsal and three to four anal spines. The lifespan of a grayling can be up to fourteen years long.

The Arctic grayling is currently being maintained and raised for commercial purposes and sport. Due to its value, the grayling is protected under the appendix three of the Bern Convention.
While the name "grayling" is used broadly for the entire Thymallus family, the term officially applies to the Arctic grayling. The name Thymallus comes from a Greek word that means "thyme smell," referring to how the grayling was often spiced with wild thyme.
The grayling is also referred to as 'lady of the stream.' Anglers used to dislike the grayling because the grayling would stop trout from colonizing various sections of rivers and streams.
The grayling are a shoal species for the most part. As a result, they can out-compete the trout, which are a more individual species.
