Understanding The History Of Taxation

Ever since a person came up with the phrase that death and taxes are the most certain things in this life, there has been an increased interest in the study of this interesting and controversial subject. There are more and more people discussing how you can legally avoid taxes, hire good tax consultants and many other things. In this particular article, I would like to look into the history of taxation so that you can understand the topic better.

In this discussion, we shall not go into details to discuss the history of taxation as it pertains the days of Egypt, Greece, and the Roman Empire. However we shall start at the point where the taxes were being paid in the Great Britain.

In England, taxes were first paid during the days when the Roman Empire occupied the land. As was custom with the tax system of the Roman Empire, taxes were collected by the local administration unit on behalf of the central government. This made the collection process very easy and effective.

Modern Taxation

Concerning the taxes as we know of today, we can trace it back to 1719 when Britain and France were at war. Like all countries back then, taxes were imposed on citizens during the war and imposed on the conquered after the war by the victorious army. For this reason, people always made sure that they were able to repeal the tax laws once the war was over. In addition to this, the income tax laws were rare and unlike what is the common practice today, income tax was really non existent at that particular time.

The Advantages

Although initially the taxes were very unpopular as they were mainly meant to serve the victorious army and a selfish monarch, there has been a general agreement that indeed, taxes are not so bad after all. This is especially true for countries where the citizens of that particular country are allowed to choose their leaders. This means that people no longer see the taxes as an avenue of satisfying the greed of a select few, but is an avenue of development for the whole nation.

One of the many advantages of taxation is that it is a source of revenue for the government. It is the income that is derived from taxes which the government can use to build roads, schools, airports and so on. Taxes are also known to be used to stabilize the economy in order to achieve the desired macroeconomic effect.
