Understanding The Pure Tone Hearing Test

During any thorough hearing test, your doctor will give you a pure tone screening

. It is often one of the first types of tests you will have to determine if you have any loss of the ability to hear. Every situation is different and your doctor needs to determine what you can and cannot hear. Though it may seem like a simple process, there are actually numerous types of tests your doctor can provide to you to get a better understanding of what could be wrong. All of them are noninvasive and take just a few minutes to complete. To have them done, visit an audiologist.

What Is This Type of Screening?

The pure tone air conduction hearing test, as it is fully known, is a method of determining the types of tones you can hear. The goal is to look for the faintest tones you can hear. It couples the volume with various types of frequencies, also known as pitches, to get an understanding of what you are able to hear. You will wear a set of headphones. During the process, each ear is individually tested to determine the condition.

During the test, the doctor will ask you to alert the tester about any sounds you hear. This is often done by raising a hand, pressing a button, pointing to the ear where the sound came from or just saying yes. Follow the directions the doctor provides to you. An audiogram is used to record your results for further study. You will spend a few minutes listening in the soundproof room. In nearly all situations, this process takes you through a loop of sounds. Some you will not hear. They are often spaced out, too, so there is not an opportunity for you to guess about the sound.

Why This One Matters

The pure tone hearing test is important because it establishes the lowest level of sound you can hear. Depending on if you have a medical condition, such as an infection or wax buildup present, or you have damaged ear drums, your doctor can then determine from this screening out to treat your condition. The process is not done alone. Rather, you will need a series of other tests to further explore what is occurring so that, if necessary, the appropriate devices can be recommended for your needs.

The pure tone hearing test is one you can expect for any thorough screening. It is often done by a specialist, but some family doctors may also perform it. The results from this test provide a baseline for the doctor. He or she will know from the outcome if you have any problems or not.
