Understanding The Weber Hearing Test Before Having It Done

Having a hearing test as an adult can be disconcerting

. No doubt it may take you a little while to choose to have one done. There are various tests out there today. The Weber is one of them. This type testing method is one that takes the cooperation of the patient, so it may not be wise for young children.

The Weber hearing test looks at whether a patient may have conductive loss or sensorineural loss.

Conductive loss deals with sound not getting past the parts of the ear that are supposed to pick up the sounds. With sensorineural loss, it is the part of the ear where the brain and cochlea meet that can be the problem. The latter situation may be caused from sounds not actually being accepted by the auditory nerve in the brain.

The Weber hearing test makes use of a tuning fork. The individual being tested needs to tell the tester where the sound is loudest. The problem with this is that it cannot just be given to anyone. It is important that those taking this believe that they could have a problem. It is also important that the individuals taking it also cooperate with the testing. This would probably not be the best option for testing a three-year-old or an even younger child.

This hearing test is also looked down upon because there is a lack of quantitative results. Rather than there being numbers to write down to describe how an individual is able to hear, what will be considered is whether the results are better or worse in a particular ear.

Even though this may not seem as effective as other tests, it may do well if it is combined with the Rinne. This is thought to be a good addition to the Weber in discovering sensorineural or conductive loss.

If you are questioning whether or not you have a problem with your ability to hear, you should not put it off. There are times when having problems in this area could even signal a life-threatening problem. If you notice a sudden change or a change on just one side, it is especially important to see your primary care physician. He or she will then refer you to the right specialists.

Do not be afraid of having a hearing test. You may not even have a problem, but it is always better to check these things out.
