Understanding Uses For A Chain Link Fence
Chain link fences are a relatively new invention
, at least in terms of the amount of time fencing has been in use. Chain link is constructed from interlocking segments of steel wire, making it very resistant to general force, such as pushing, but weak to specific force, such as cutting. It is used primarily in security and privacy applications in commercial, government, and military areas.
It is a cost-effective solution for impeding the movement of both people and large animals (smaller animals are generally able to climb it or get beneath it), and easy to maintain and replace. Here, we'll go over some of the general information regarding chain link, as well as how to maintain and replace it.
Chain link is most often used for corporate and government security, because it is very cheap to install and maintain, and provides a solid deterrent against most potential intruders. Its weakness is that it can be bent and even cut with the proper tools, making most serious invasions relatively easy. For this reason it can be reinforced with several security measures, although it is still used primarily as a "front line" of defense for high security areas, such as prisons and military installations.
If a greater degree of security is necessary, chain link can be augmented with a number of forms of extra security. The most popular addition is barbed wire, which deters most casual intruders and makes the fence much harder to climb. It is generally placed along the top of the fence to prevent vaulting over it. Razor wire is also used to create a more threatening barrier (razor wire is much more capable of causing harm and cutting clothing and skin, rather than simply tangling up intruders), and is found mainly on high security government and military sites.
Chain link can also be electrified, creating a dangerous barrier. Chain link fencing in high security areas is also typically made with a much thicker steel wire than standard issue chain link, making it harder to cut through or bend.
Chain link is very useful for security applications, but is not frequently used around the home because it is not very attractive. It is perfect for everything from simple barriers to more complex security measures, and can be used in virtually any setting because of its low cost maintenance and easy to replace nature. Chain link is a popular solution for security.
