Understanding What You Need For Your Log Home
Most people that own a log home for any amount of time understand the necessity of
maintaining and protecting the logs from the elements and the insects. Though you will often see people slack on these types of responsibilities and end up with serious repair costs later. If investing into these types of homes is something you are thinking of or if you already have one then this article will give you some pointers into what you should be doing.
Anyone that looks at your log wall might be fooled into thinking that such a solid structure will stand for hundreds of years, but without protection it disintegrates rather quickly. Everything has a shelf life and trees do rot and get chewed by insects just like any other organic matter.
It"s not all bad because things can be done to protect it. The following 3 tips can set you up with a routine schedule to help ward against premature decay of your log home.
1. Looking over your homes exterior is the first phase of maintaining and beautifying your logs. It is recommended to do this step every year because you want to make sure that you catch any type of insect, mold, mildew, or UV damage before it get s real bad. The damage that the UV rays have on your logs includes discoloration and makes your logs an easy target for many other types of damaging effects that will lead to decay. Though I suggest you not only look for discoloration, but also other strange looking stains. Any sign of it and you'll need to start a rejuvenation project which is more often than not done with a log brightener solution made up of oxygen bleach and soda ash.
2. Once you sure you have your logs cleaned you will need to start filling any of the cracks you found to keep things like carpenter ants and moisture out. These cracks need to be filled with a special compound that allows expansion and shrinking of the logs without causing it to crack. You can find these chinking compounds at your local log home supply store or at different sites online. It is an easy job that almost anyone should be able to accomplish, but for those that really don't have the time hiring a log home maintenance crew to do it for you may be the best option. However if there are any structural logs that have started to rot you will need to hire a professional as this type of job requires specialized skills.
3. Your last step in rejuvenating your home is to make sure that no old stain is left on the home if you're planning on applying a fresh coat on new stain. You want to make sure that the stain will penetrate into the logs as much as possible. It is also important that the stain you choose has been designed for use in your area. If you want my opinion I can safely say that the oil based types generally work better that the water based ones do. If you do choose water based one make sure you give it 3 coats and then finish it up with a clear one.
This guide teaches you what you need to do, but doing it is up you. It'll do more than just protect your home it actually protects your money as it will save you from any expensive repairs later on.
