A trip down the ocean can be someone's treasure hunt

. The sea holds interest to a large variety of people. It holds a potential that is undiscovered and hidden.

Fishing has been practiced for thousands of years; since the time of Early Man. Nutritionally, fisheries provide almost 16% of the world's totally protein. Today 90 million tonnes of fish are caught in the oceans each year.

The commercial fishing industry has not only obtained fish for us to eat but also for making ornaments. There has been a rising trend of aquaculture, for example: fish farming. The marine species can be grown under controlled conditions.

Did you know that sea contains gold four hundred times more than land? There has been mining of sea gold in some parts of the world. The sea contains such a massive amount of gold reserve that if all the gold in the seas were distributed every individual on this planet would be getting almost 4kgs of gold approximately.

The compressed dead bodies of the sea creatures over the years have made huge oil reserves. It is interesting to note that over one fifth of earth's oil demand is being met through oil taken out of the oceans. Norway is one of the biggest offshore oil producers.

The sea is also not just a large store of oil reserves that can be used to generate power; the tides can be harnessed to meet the earth's energy needs too. The world's first energy plant was built in France in River Rance. Tidal energy is eco-friendly and a renewable source of energy that does not harm the environment nor deplete earth's resources.

We obtain massive amounts of salts from the sea apart from the salt mines found on land. Almost 66 million tonnes are extracted each year. This amount could make pyramids thrice the size found in Egypt.

Icebergs which are found in the North and South Poles are seen as huge reserves of freshwater. They are towed away by boats and could solve the problems of water crisis during drought and famine. They could be prevented from melting by wrapping them in huge layers of plastic for long term use.
