Unified Communications Made Easier With Sip

SIP, or Session Initiated Protocol, is the standard for integration of separate protocols

into a fluid platform for communications that allows various devices and applications to work simultaneously for real time data transfer and voice calling.

Regular phone service is linear. Phone calls originate at one point and end at another point; think of it like two kids with cups on either end of a string. Occasionally other strings may tie in for conferencing, but the entire process is clumsy at best - and requires participants to be physically located on each end otf the string. It's not portable, it's not convenient, and it is extremely restricted as far as features go.

SIP initiates, modifies and terminates sessions in a different way. It's more like opening up a room, and allowing the two parties to sit down and converse, with extra doorways being opened as needed for other participants to join the conversation. When all parties have finished, the room simply collapses as the session terminates.

When SIP is combined with a service such as IP-PBX or Hosted VoIP, participants aren't locked into specific locations. They can be in the office, at home or on the road, using a VoIP phone handset, a PC with voice and audio equipment (soft-phone), or a mobile phone. SIP means being able to combine all of these technologies into a comprehensive form of unified communication that can also be integrated with IM, video and voicemail.

Voice mail messages can be sent to, opened and played on a desktop browser before being forwarded to another party or deleted. Conference calling is simplified and inexpensive, with participants able to join in from all over the world. Infrastructure costs decrease significantly as there is no need for in house hardware - everything can be hosted off site and software used to tie everything together over the online interface.

SIP isn't so much a tool itself as it is a hub that all other tools can plug into to work together smoothly. Traditional telephony, IP-PBX, hosted VoIP, internet access and online tools can all be integrated in a modular network. SIP contributes the capability to let different protocols 'speak' to one another. This enables real time communication with a minimum amount of hassle and cost.

Instead of the strictly linear form that traditional phone service is restricted to, SIP allows different forms of data transfer to happen simultaneously and integrates all the different types of hardware and software into a seamlessly performing system. For business communications applications, SIP is the ultimate workhorse that helps things get done.
