Unilateral hearing loss is a very common problem seen in many people

. This condition is also known as the single sided deafness. Since the other ear is normal, many people do not seem to know that they are suffering from this problem for a very long time.

In the unilateral hearing loss, the affected person may suffer from hearing loss in one ear because of sensorineural causes. The sensorineural hearing loss could be caused due to various reasons in the person who is affected. Only one ear is affected with these problems. When there is a sudden noise that is close to one of the ears, the cochlea of that ear gets damaged and leads to deafness on that side. There are some people who suffer from hearing loss in one ear because of hereditary reasons. A usual cause of hearing loss unilaterally is head injury.

There are also some specific causes of single sided deafness. Trauma is one of the causes. There are other people who suffer from high fever or even measles that could cause this condition. An affected person will not be able to identify the problem easily because the other ear is working normally. In case of loud sounds in the background, it is very difficult to hear and understand what people are talking.

When a person is affected with unilateral hearing loss, there could be either moderate or even severe hearing loss. It is very important for the person who is suffering from this problem to consult an audiologist. The audiologist will diagnose the cause and then perform some tests of hearing and then ascertain the degree of hearing loss that is present.

Some of the people who are affected with single sided deafness can suffer from tinnitus or a ringing sound in the ear. It is irritating for the affected person to suffer from Tinnitus. Other than tinnitus, the presence of wax in the ear can also lead to severe loss of hearing on one side.

Those who are suffering from this unilateral hearing impairment cannot use all kinds of hearing aids. One of the specific hearing aids that can be used is the contralateral routing of signals. This is a hearing aid that functions in such a way that the sound that is heard on the side of the ear that has impaired hearing is taken to the side where the ear is normal. The unilateral hearing loss is overcome with this.
