Where Do You Work?

One of the big issues when you work at home is where you are going to work. If you want to get things done, then having work space of your own is very important. Without a work space that is set aside for you, it is more difficult to work from home. Whether you have to set up a bit of space in the garage, the basement, or a spare room, just having a quiet area where you can get away from the noise of the home is important.

Dealing with Distractions When Working at Home

Another issue that often occurs when working at home is the distractions that are created by your family, and sometimes yourself. These distractions are very different than in the corporate work place. Here are a few of the distractions you will probably encounter.

-Distraction #1 - Family Duties - This is especially the case for moms who are working from home. It's so easy to see things in the house that need done, and before you know it you stop work and you start doing it. Of course there are kids that want your attention too, which can distract you. A solution to this problem is to buy headphones to block out the noise and have a policy where you close the door when doing important work and you need peace.

-Distraction #2 - Online Distractions - There are often online distractions that tend to draw you in, such as your IM window, your emails that constantly pop up, or even your social networking site. Don't let these things steal your time.

-Distraction #3 - The Phone - Often the phone can be a huge distraction. It may ring frequently, driving you crazy while you are working. If you have to, put your phone on silent. They can leave a message. Consider having a work phone and a family phone so you can answer the important calls and let the rest go.

If it Can Go Wrong...

Sometimes when you work at home, it feels like if it can go wrong, it ends up going wrong. These days happen. A child screams while you are on the phone with a client, your kids get sick, or maybe you get sick. Having a backup plan can help keep these things from destroying your business. Working ahead can be a huge lifesaver that will help you out and even having a good partner can make things much easier for you.
