The Longhorns (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) pulled away in the second half. In the fourth quarter, Texas' Jordan Shipley also returned a punt for a touchdown. The wide receiver added a 39-yard touchdown catch and finished the game with 147 yards on 11 receptions.

Texas coach Mack Brown said it was a physical game that the Longhorns needed to win going into next week's match-up against No. 19 Oklahoma. Colorado (1-4, 0-1) only managed 127 total yards. They went up 14-3 in the first half. Although the Buffaloes blocked a field goal attempt, created two turnovers, and held Texas to 313 yards (their lowest this season), they couldn't stop the Longhorns' offense.

Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins had a great first half. He threw two touchdowns off play-action plays. The first TD pass went to Patrick Devenny and the second was thrown to Riar Greer in the second quarter after Texas quarterback Colt McCoy fumbled on the Longhorn six-yard line. Texas came back in the first half when McCoy found a wide open Shipley for the Longhorns' first score. In the second half, the crowd of 101,152 booed Texas for failing to reach midfield on their first two drives. However, Texas' special teams and defense quickly turned the boos into cheers. Goodwin turned the game around after he slipped through a seam in the right side of the Buffaloes' punt protection and blocked the kick.

The ball spun backwards and landed on the three-yard line, where Wells scooped it up and ran in the end zone for a 17-14 lead. Shipley stated that Texas expected those types of plays on special teams. Colorado was still in the game when Jalil Brown intercepted a Shipley drop deep in Texas territory, but Hawkins threw an errant pass and Thomas made an easy pick before he darted along the sideline for the touchdown. The 92-yard return tied for the second-longest in Texas history. Hawkins went 6-of-18 for 68 yards with two interceptions before he was benched. Sophomore Tyler Hansen took over for Hawkins. After the game, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins, Cody's father, told the press that Hansen is now the starter for the Buffaloes.

The coach announced that his son has to perform better. He added that Hansen "is such a trooper and we're just gonna go with him." Shipley extended the score 31-14 with his punt return. He caught the ball and weaved in and out of players right up the middle for 20 yards before jetting to his left side. Shipley found a clear path all the way to the end zone for the score. After the game, Longhorn fans were chanting "Beat OU!" McCoy was not ready to join the crowd in the stadium. The quarterback said he wanted to enjoy the victory over Colorado before he thinks about next week's matchup against the Sooners.
