Windows XP users can upgrade to Windows 7 by first upgrading to Vista. The key here is that you do not need to activate Vista after you have upgraded your PC. You can move straight on to upgrade to Windows 7. This fact gives hope to several XP users who intend to purchase Windows 7, as all they will require is a legitimate copy of Vista. As you can no longer download a trial version of Vista, you might just have to turn to your friends to borrow a copy of the operating system.

While upgrading to Vista, do not enter any serial number which you will be asked, instead opt to do that later. When you opt not to enter the serial number, the setup program will ask which version of Windows you purchased. Here, you need to enter Vista Business. The reason being there is no upgrade path between XP Professional and Vista Home Basic or Home Premium. Once you have upgraded to Vista, you can then proceed to the second phase upgrading to Windows 7. To do this, you will need to purchase a genuine copy of Windows 7. The process of upgradation from Vista to Windows 7 is fairly simple and all you will need to do is to follow the instructions that appear. However, before you begin the upgradation ensure you have about 9 GB of free space available for installation. Once the setup process is complete, reboot your PC and enjoy the pleasures of Windows 7.
