Uplights and Downlights to Brighten Your Home

If you desire to brighten your home without increasing glare, consider using uplights or downlights. Uplights are lighting fixtures which direct light up a wall and reflect light off a ceiling. Downlights direct light down a wall. Both methods provide a soft, bright light by using those surfaces as reflectors.

Uplights and downlights come in a variety of forms which can be effectively used for this purpose. They can be mounted to walls (sconces), installed in floors or in ceilings (spotlights or recessed puck lights), or be a freestanding floor lamp (Torchiere). If an uplight or downlight requires a shade, a translucent shade is desirable as it will allow more ambient light to escape into the room, thus adding to its overall brightness.

Uplights and downlights are versatile and yet are best utilized in specific areas to obtain the best results. The goal of uplighting and downlighting is to provide a splash of light onto a wall or ceiling without interfering with the rest of the room's furnishings.

Wall sconces are normally used in pairs and should be placed in spaces on the wall where they can provide the maximum illumination as well as look aesthetically pleasing. Normally, they are used on either side of a large framed picture or a mirror which provides extra reflective qualities to the room. Wall sconce models are available to direct light upward, downward, or even open-ended to direct light both up and down a wall. Sconces are excellent fixtures for use in hallways or to illuminate stairways.

Puck lights are generally recessed into a ceiling and cast their light down a wall. Some models can be swiveled and this is the best option for downlighting as more of the fixture's light can be directed towards the wall, thus providing optimum illumination.

Torchiere floor lamps are best used behind pieces of furniture or to accent a bare corner. The light they provide is quite pleasant and the lamps themselves are attractive additions to the room's dcor.

As you can see, the proper use of lighting fixtures can make a noticeable difference in the brightness of a room. It's not always necessary to add large, bulky light fixtures to a room when well placed lighting can more effectively meet your lighting needs.
