Uriyadi A traditional Pot breaking Game during temple festivals.Before describing this temple festival Uriyadi lets know understand history. Lord Sri Krishna was born in the "Rohini" nakshatram (Star) on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in sravana month and every Hindu celebrate the birthday of Lord Krishna as Janmashtami, Krishnashtami or Sree Krishna Jayanti festival with great dedication and joy. This actual day of festival celebration can be on two different days as the star "Rohini" and "Ashtami" may not be on the same day. Janmashtami festival is celebrated with grandeur and lot of sweets including payasam, illundee and appam with a lot of butter is made as offering to the legend.

During Janmashtami festival, the devotees play a lot of traditional temple festival games and Uriyadi is the most popular amongst those. This Uriyadi is practiced in two different traditional forms. Traditionally, an earthen pot is hung high up in the air and is suspended by ropes. The pot hangs at a height of about 30-40 feet from the ground.

Groups of young lads try and break this pot. Traditionally the pot would contain a mixture of milk, dry fruits and clarified butter (ghee).his temple festival game is very simple a group of lads with a long sticks approach to break the earthen pot. Another group controls the rope on which the earthen pot is fixed and they alter the height and make the job more interesting for the ones who attempt to break it as well as the ones who have come to watch this temple festival.
