Us Immigration Laws Have Tightened Since 9 11 2001
The United States of America has been a land of immigrants since its inception
. US immigration has always been a part of the country. Unless you are of Native American descent, you or your family ancestors immigrated to this country at some point in time. The U.S. has been known as a melting pot of nationalities from around the globe and proudly welcomed the huddled masses as is scribed on the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island, New York City.
In 2008 a record amount of just over one million persons received naturalisation status as U.S. citizens, the majority of which came from India, Mexico, and the Philippines. Thanks to immigrants to the US, there has been seen major numbers in population growth resulting in many cultural changes throughout history of this country. Socially, economically, and politically speaking there has always been controversy in regards to jobs, religion, economic benefits, environmental impact, criminality, and work habits as this melting pot tries to get along with so many cultures attempting to combine into one.
While US immigration is what this country is all about, it has presented difficulties over the decades. The influx of migrants from Mexico has been a continual problem which only seems to get worse with time. People cannot support their families in their homeland and so try to enter the US in any way possible in order to find jobs and send money back to feed their families. While the US does appreciate the workers and their efforts, they are entering illegally and must be returned whenever they are caught. There is a certain element of crime involved when any action is performed illegally and some of those who come to America do so as opportunists with no intention of becoming model citizens of the country.
Ever since September 11, 2001 the United States as well as many other countries have beefed up their immigration laws to include more security measures that make it tougher to enter the country illegally, but there is much more yet to do.
In 2002 the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Form Act went into use stating the need for more Border Patrol agents, foreign nationals are required to carry identification with biometric technology enhancements, and that foreign students to the US must actually attend classes.
In 2005 the Real ID Act further directed that no one shall enter any government buildings, open bank accounts, or board airplanes without identification meeting high security standards. This act also established state driving license standards are to be met nationally, and further cleared way to build more secure border barriers.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement also known as ICE is the federal law enforcement agency that answers to the US Department of Homeland Security or DHS. They are responsible for investigating, identifying, and changing vulnerable portions along any area of the United States border. ICE enforces over four hundred federal statutes in the US, also maintaining attaches at the major US embassies abroad. This all entitles US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to possess the broadest and strongest investigative authority within the US Government. Their mission is to protect the United States while enforcing and upholding immigration as well as customs laws.
