Other items that need to be checked is the building's facilities. This includes the basics such as parking, access to the apartment unit, furnishings, laundry facilities, garbage disposal system, and fire safety features among others.

Talking to the landlord about important issues is also a part of the checklist before one decides to get the apartment. Included in things to be discussed are if the utilities are factored in the rent or if they are paid for separately, the requirements to have the security deposit refunded, and responsibility for repairs.

It is equally important to be familiar with the rules regarding pets, the number of occupants permitted to stay in an apartment unit, and whether subletting is possible. It is also essential to be informed about the restrictions on having guests and holding parties.

The last part of the checklist is to be filled out when moving in. This is when one should take note and make a record of the state of the apartment during the move in date.

The best way to accomplish this is to list down the contents (existing furnishings, appliances, etc.) and features (condition of faucets, light switches, etc.) in each room. The itemized results of the walk-through should be documented and signed by the landlord in order to avoid accountability for any defects that existed before renting the apartment.
