Useful Information On Espalmador, Formentera
Isla de S'Espalmador is also known as: Espalmador
, Isla Espalmador, or S'Espalmador. It is a tiny island that is part of the Balearic Islands. It has no inhabitants. The exact location of the island is: 38 46,5N 01 25,4E. That places it off to the north of Formentera. Espalmador has two other small islets nearby: Illa Castavi and Illa des Porcs. There is a sand bar just under the water that connects Formentera with Espalmador, and when there is a low tide wading between the two islands is possible. This area is a popular mooring for yachts heading between Ibiza and Formentera. Features of the island include pristine beaches and a distinctive lighthouse.Isla de S'Espalmador is owned privately does not have any utilities that can be used by anchoring boats. It does have a bay in the north-west which can be used as a shelter for yachts and motor boats. The maximum depth in the centre of the bay is five metres so a sea captain should exercise caution. There are mud baths in the middle of the island which are a favorite with tourists.Standing at Formentera's Playa de Illetes you can clearly see the enticing blue waters and white sand beaches of Espalmador, and many tourists decide to swim across. However, there is no need to risk life and limb bracing the perilous currents as there are regular ferries leaving from Port de la Savina each morning. The ferries also stop at Les Illetes, so if you happen to be doing a spot of naked sunbathing over there then you can slip on some clothes for the ferry journey, and then get naked again for the mud baths of Espalmdor. The mud baths of Espalmador attract a lot of tourists, and sometimes too many. It is a natural resource to relax in and not somewhere to have a mud fight - at one point the area had to be closed down because it was being abused. Those going to the mad baths walk along Platja de s'Alga, through some scrubland and out onto the area where the salt pans are - this is where the mud baths are located.Espalmador is roughly 2,995 meters in length and 800 meters wide. It has a coastline which is made up of cliffs except for a great bay in the south and a small bay in the north-west which is a fine place for boats because it is protected by the islet known as Illa de Sa Torreta.by: Amato Espinal
