Chania is the capital of the prefecture of Chania, located in the north eastern part of the island and is built on the ruins of ancient Kydonia. Many argue that it is the most beautiful and picturesque town of Crete and in Greece, and many cultural events take place each year.

The Chania airport is located in Akrotiri and Souda Bay is the largest port in the Mediterranean. Downtown you can see the Municipal Market which takes the shape of a cross, built like the market in Marseille. A very short distance from the centre of town is the Public Garden adjacent to the park Peace and Friendship'. The picturesque Venetian harbour is an attraction for visitors and locals, renowned for its beauty and choice of entertainment for all tastes and requirements.

The Chania old city inside the walls keep the Venetian nobility, the narrow cobblestone streets are surrounded by tasteful renewed houses, leading to the Venetian harbour and offering a pleasant walks. The Venetian port has many restaurants, cafes and tourist shops.

Chania's Venetian Port is one of the most important areas in the city of Chania. It was constructed between 1320 and 1356 by the Venetians to protect the city. The lighthouse is the hallmark of the city. Main elements in the exceptional architecture are the surrounding buildings, narrow streets, and a Turkish mosque and a little further afield, the old shipyards, where the Venetians built their ships. To the left of the harbour is the fortress of Bastion next to the Maritime Museum.

Today it is one of the most developed tourist attractions in Chania with many restaurants, hotels,taverns, cafes and bars along the sea. Especially at night the view is fantastic.
