Usher In Autumn At Europes Best Festivals

From fountains filled with wine in Spain to chocolate fashion shows in France

, autumn is a fantastic time to visit Europe if you are a fan of weird and wonderful festivals. Traditionally its a time of harvests and feasts, so there are food and drink festivals aplenty stretching across the region from Greece and Italy to France and Germany. Each has a distinctly national flavour, with something to suit everyone from beer buffs to spicy food lovers.

There are also some fun cultural festivals to cheer the spirit as the days become shorter and the climate starts to cool. Spain, for instance, hosts a number of movie fiestas throughout autumn in Barcelona and Marbella, and London has its much-lauded BFI film festival from 10 October. Late in the year is the best time to grab a great deal on breaks to Europe too, with dozens of packages available on the Holiday Discount Centre website.

Perhaps one of the most famous and popular autumn festivals in Europe is Germanys 16-day Oktoberfest, which runs until 7 October in Munich. Its a fun and free celebration of beer and Bavarian culture with numerous drinking tents, a dizzying array of fairground rides, and lots of tasty local cuisine.

If you prefer wine to beer, you can indulge in a truly unique experience at autumns most novel festival Feria de Octubre. During early October the fountains of the Spanish town of Cadiar near Malaga are filled with wine instead of water for revellers to enjoy at their leisure. Its the perfect festival to drop into if you are taking one of the cheap autumn breaks available on websites like Holiday Discount Centre.

For foodies, autumn in Europe is carnival heaven. Unsurprisingly, gastronomic giant France leads the field, with several superb festivals in the Basque country. If you enjoy powerful flavours, yummy pimento peppers are celebrated in their European home town of Espelette on the last weekend of October.

Holidaymakers with a sweet tooth should head straight for the incredible Salon du Chocolat fair in Paris at the end of October. Its the biggest chocolate extravaganza in the world, with an amazing chocolate fashion show featuring frocks crafted from cocoa, as well as childrens workshops, cooking schools and tastings galore.

Though summer seems to have the monopoly on music festivals, autumn has its fair share too. The beautiful Irish city of Cork hosts a two-week jazz festival from 24 October, which is just one of many festivals taking place to celebrate the musical genre this season. London hosts one of the best from 9 November, with some of the biggest names in jazz playing gigs at fantastic venues all over the city from Roni Scotts to the Royal Albert Hall.
