Using A Knife To Cut Your Cigar

When you take a look at the prices for some cigar accessories

, you may start wondering if there are ways that you could save a bit of money here and there. In fact, you may start asking yourself "can I use a knife to cut a cigar?" The answer to this question is technically "yes" but, if at all possible, you should avoid it.

The reason that people go ahead and spend a bit of money on a cigar cutter of decent quality is that the cigars themselves merit it. You can cut a cigar with a knife but, if you must, make sure that you can honestly say a few things about what you're about to do. First, you should be using an extremely sharp knife. If you cut the cigar with a ragged edge, you risk ruining the entire thing by causing the wrapper to unravel or by causing the filler to come out.

The second thing you should think about before you cut a cigar with a knife is whether or not you have a better alternative. If you can even find a nail, pen or pencil around and poke a hole in the capped end of the cigar, you'll generally get better results than you would trying to saw through the cigar with a knife. Most of the time, the best advice in this regard is to simply wait until you can find a proper cigar cutter. If you have an expensive cigar, definitely wait until you have a cigar cutter. If you walk into most cigar shops, they would probably cut it for you on principle rather than have you cut it with a knife and ruin the stogie.

One of the most popular types of cutters you might want to consider using instead of a knife is a wedge cutter. When you use these cutters to remove the cap of the cigar, there will create a wedge like hole for you to draw the smoke through. These cutters often closely resemble a guillotine cutter, but do not actually remove the entire cap off of the cigar.

It is important to understand that the use of a knife to cut the end of a cigar is not ideal. In most cases, the cut will cause some of the cigar wrapper to become damaged. Do not try to fix this damage as it could result in further damage to the cigar. The importance lies within the smoker being able to fully enjoy the taste and smell of their cigar, not their being content with how the smoking end looks.
