Using Basic Lab Supplies
Experimenting makes learning more memorable and interesting
. In order to perform various experiments you will need to have the use of different lab supplies.
Some of the main supplies that can be categorized and organized include measuring tools, general lab equipment, glassware and plastic ware, chemicals, and safety equipment.
These categories will help you decide what supplies you need to get to have your own basic science lab. Measuring tools are much needed supply, not only in the kitchen but also, in the lab.
Examples of measuring tools include thermometers, rulers, measuring cups, and pipettes which are essential equipment for most experiments by ensuring accuracy and adding control.
Measuring tools can be used to measure liquids and dry goods, distance, and weight. Because of their usability and versatility they are used in many experiments.
Glassware and plastic ware is important to hold in chemicals. Be aware that some chemicals can be dangerous. Some may react differently with glass and plastic so be sure to do some research before choosing which material is best for you.
The glassware and plastic category would include items such as glass beakers, flasks, test tubes, graduated cylinders for measuring liquids, bottles, crucibles, evaporating dishes, funnels, watch glasses, and stirring rods.
Glassware and plastic may be easily overlooked. But, these containers are likely to be one of the first things you will miss as well. Make sure that you have enough of these containers and other necessary tools before starting an experiment.
Chemicals can be used to enhance learning. When using chemicals, make sure you read any warnings that are listed on the bottle's label.
Use the chemicals responsibly. This means know the basic chemistry before adding chemicals into a experimental lab setting.
The chemical category includes the use of chemicals such as acetic acid, calcium oxide, cobalt, lithium chloride, litmus paper, magnesium chloride, silver nitrate, sulfur, and zinc powder -- which are just a few of the many chemicals that can be found and used in a lab.
Safety equipment is important. You always want to take precautions seriously when experimenting. There are many hazards that can come up including fire, chemicals, broken glass, and a long list of others.
If you're doing a lab that involves chemicals, fire, or other issues, be sure to protect yourself with the right safety equipment. Select from safety equipment like lab aprons, heavy-duty chemical-resistant gloves, and safety splash goggles.
Safety equipment comes in both adult and child sizes so you can find always find the right size. Getting the right size is important because it prevents danger that can occur from tripping on an over-sized apron or goggles that are falling into eyes.
When you have all the basic lab supplies you need, you will be able to effectively experiment and continue to learn new things.
