Having a visual to refer to allows the colorist an opportunity to explain what color and tone will look best up against and closest to the skin. That applies to an all-over color or multi-color. Reds are tricky. There are golden reds, strawberry red,red reds, auburn, brown reds, copper reds, mahogany, cool red, and red violets. Brunettes also vary in depth and tone.
