Using Insulin Pumps
Insulin is a requirement for people with type 1 diabetes
. Depending on the progression, people with type 2 diabetes will sometimes need insulin. The most common type of delivering insulin into a diabetic's bloodstream is via syringe but there are other types of delivery as well like insulin pens and pumps.
Whichever type of insulin delivery is used, insulin must be introduced in the same general area of the body for consistency and should be timed in such a way that it coincides with meals or times when an influx of glucose needs to be processed.
Using an insulin pump offers a simpler way of managing diabetes. It removes the multiple injections necessary when using the traditional insulin syringe delivery. With insulin pump, insulin therapy is adjusted to a diabetic's lifestyle instead of the other way around. Insulin delivery can be timed to coincide with meals or in small doses throughout the day.
As insulin dosing is programmed and controlled electronically, using insulin pumps is more precise. With the constant basal rate delivered throughout the day and the bolus rate to compensate during mealtimes, with insulin pumps diabetics avoid frequent large swings in blood glucose levels. Diabetics avoid extremely low blood glucose or hypoglycemia which can be life-threatening. As most insulin pumps have accompanying food glucose database, a diabetic can be more flexible with what and when to eat.
Insulin pumps are also designed to adapt to diabetic's lifestyle. As they are worn attached to the body, they eliminate the hassle of bring insulin vials, syringes, swabs and other supplies associated with traditional insulin delivery via syringe. A diabetic can also dose insulin in any situation, like during dinners or business meetings. Most pumps are also water proof so they can be worn even while swimming or when engaged in sporty activities.
Perhaps the only major setback in considering the use of insulin pumps is the cost associated with it and whether it can be covered by insurance. Compared to insulin via syringes, insulin pumps cost quite a fortune! They will also require training and familiarity compared to using syringes. The other downside is that if the catheter (the tube inserted under skin to deliver insulin) is dislodged, the diabetic may not know it which could result to the absence of insulin dosing for many hours before detection. Being attached to an insulin pump 24 hours may bother some diabetics as an insulin pump essentially becomes an external pancreas which a diabetic cannot live without even for a short period of time.
