Using Magnesium to Improve Sexual Health

Magnesium is an essential mineral that is available in foods such as fish

, nuts, broccoli, spinach, tofu, and whole grains. The human body uses it for over 300 biological processes; it is the 4th most abundant mineral in the human body. Magnesium is used in the production of sex hormones and neurotransmitters such as dopamine and epinephrine. It also helps the body absorb calcium, and is vital to maintaining strong bones and teeth. Magnesium has also been shown to stabilize heart rhythm, and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Recently magnesium has been shown to be beneficial for sexual health as well.

In a 4-week study conducted to determine the effectiveness of magnesium supplementation on testosterone levels, magnesium was discovered to significantly increase total testosterone levels in sedentary men and in athletic men. Although both groups experienced gains, the athletic men experienced a greater increase in total testosterone than the sedentary men.

Recent research has also demonstrated that suboptimal magnesium levels may lead to premature ejaculation. More specifically, decreased levels of magnesium leads to increased vasoconstriction (constriction of blood vessels), decreased nitric oxide, and increased intracellular calcium- all of these factors can collectively cause premature ejaculation.

Some other supplements that can help increase nitric oxide are L-Arginine and Horny Goat Weed. L-Arginine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning that the body can make it. When consumed, it is converted to nitric oxide in the body when it is broken down (in large quantities, L-Arginine has been shown to stimulate the pituitary gland to release growth hormone). Horny Goat Weed doesn't actually increase nitric oxide, but rather, prevents an enzyme known as PDE5 from destroying nitric oxide.
