Using N To Beat Your Scrabble N-emy

One of the most commonly found letters in Scrabble is the letter N

. It has 6 tiles and only affords you a value of 1. Thus, many of us take no note of this letter, deeming words that start with N as unimportant compared to those that start with Q, Z, X, and J. And in a way, that would be true. But there are also two great things about words starting with N that can potentially help you win the game.

Since N can be frequently found in different words, words that start with N are easily built by players. These words are also much easier to remember than others. This is because most words starting with N are familiar to us and used in every day conversations. Some examples that come to mind are NARROW, NEW, NOBLE, NICE, and NUDE. Of course, many would say that these words dont amount to much. They can work in a pinch but they dont really bring home the bacon; they dont earn you high enough points to win a game. That certainly is true. Looking at these particular words that start with N, the highest score that you can get is a 9 which is unimpressive to say the least. Since the goal is to earn a large number of points, its safe to say that a score of 9 falls short of the mark. But what players often forget is that a lot of N words have a lot to offer than just one play. Many words that start with N can be added onto to create longer words that have a high score. Looking at the word NEW, its easy to see that a lot of big words can be built using that word. You can build NEWLYWED (18), NEWSHAWK (21), and NEWSWORTHY (22). The word NARROW can be added onto as well. Some examples are NARROWBAND (16) and NARROWCASTING (19). With these examples, its easy to see that while the initial play may not have garnered you a high number of points, it opens up a lot of possibilities to make high scoring plays later on.

Another great thing about the letter N is its presence in prefixes. There are quite a bit of words that start off with NON, NEO, and NEURO. Knowing the words that have these prefixes can help you earn a high score. The best thing about them is that you dont necessarily have to come up with the base word yourself. You can build off from one of your opponents plays and earn more than he or she got on that particular turn.

Of course, learning the words that start with N does not have as big of an impact as learning the word lists of the high value letters. But, they certainly can make scoring high in Scrabble a whole lot easier and maybe even win you the game.
