Using Traditional Pilot Headsets

The role of technology in private aviation is becoming increasingly more ubiquitous

with the rise of portable computing such as smart phones and tablet computers. Although such technology will never totally replace the traditional methods of navigation and in-flight organisation, they are an exceptionally useful adjunct. Indeed, it is not inconceivable that we will soon see pilot headsets which not only allow radio communication, but incorporate a head-up display showing important flight info for ease of reference. Indeed, the idea of such advance pilot headsets has been mooted by more than one aviation equipment manufacturer and the development of projects such as Googles well-publicised electronic goggles makes this development particularly likely.

However, until this time, pilots will have to make do with traditional pilot headsets and console themselves with the presence of iPad and other tablet computers. These are finding an increasing role in the cockpit, not only providing real-time GPS information, but also for ease of reference to pre-flight checklists, chart information and radio frequencies. More than one aviation manufacture can supply an advanced GPS module that can be attached to the iPad and other tablet computers to deliver even greater GPS accuracy, necessary for proper, real-time navigation.

Pilots appreciate the tactility of tablet computers whilst also relishing their ability to easily ogle between other information. Indeed, the number of software applications that can now be purchased for the Android and iOS operating systems is considerable and includes everything from basic flight computers for calculating navigation courses, to lists of commonly used radio frequencies and emergency protocols for a variety of events. Many pilots have even developed their own apps with off the counter app authoring programmes, creating setups that work specifically for their way of working. This trend perhaps gives us a snapshot of the future when it comes to aviation with the focus being on the presentation of information the way that the pilot wants to see it rather than the way it has been organised purely by convention. The greater efficiency which comes with the judicious use of advanced technology will surely make flights safer and easier, with the adjunct that pilots have more time to check those things which should be given greater priority.

There are many flight stores that already offer a range of equipment for use with iPad and other tablet computers, including mounting systems that will keep your tablet in place and where you need it during the flight. Simply running a basic search will elicit a wide range of options and many of the combined packages on offer are certainly worth looking at.
