Using Twitter - Who Should You Follow?

The first thing you want to determine, before you start following people on Twitter, iswhat is your goal. Why are you using Twitter?

If you are using it for communicating with friends, then friends are the ones you will follow.

But if you are on Twitter because you want to promote your business or blog, there are some good rules about who you want to follow. Many Twitter users follow back everyone that follows them. I believe this is wrong and this practice will not always be beneficial for you.

The first reason is that your Twitter stream will be flooded with tweets from people you have no genuine interest in. With all that Twitter noise, you will not be able to read tweets of people that you really wanna hear from.

Second reason not to follow back everyone is that people you follow are the image of you in the eyes of your followers or even business prospects.

You want your image to be perfect so that is how you will choose who to follow.

To make a list:

follow people who are experts in your niche

follow people that tweet great tweets from your niche

follow those who engage in conversations with their followers

follow people who are not tweeting links only and if they are tweeting a lot of links, make sure they are not all self promotional

To start following great Twitter users, just check out their Twitter links on blogs they write for or their business websites. Most companies have Twitter accounts.

Instead of doing different searches for users that might be interested in the same things as you are, see who are your favorite users following. You will usually find great people to follow like that.

Don't forget to use Twitter lists. Most lists are descriptive so you will see lists like "favorite people", "internet marketing experts", "people with great tweets", etc. Just follow the whole list and if you don't like someone after awhile, unfollow them to keep your Twitter stream less noisy.
