Using Zippos To Light A Cigar

While there are many reasons to buy Zippo lighters

, lighting cigars is generally not considered to be among them. These lighters are powered by lighter fluid which has a characteristic taste and odor to it. When lighting a cigar with one of these lighters, that taste and odor is transferred to the tobacco and it can effectively ruin a good smoke. Most cigar smokers prefer to use one of two other methods to light their stogies.

Zippos use liquid lighter fuel to produce a flame. This lighter fuel is an oily substance which has a distinctive taste and odor. Cigarette smokers who use these lighters soon learn to not inhale the first puff off of their cigarettes when they light it with a Zippo. This is because the taste of the lighter fluid washes through the tobacco and becomes very apparent every time one takes a puff off of their stogie. Most cigar smokers avoid these lighters for that reason.

Polluting the filler and paper in a cigar with lighter fluid taste constitutes a waste of a fine smoke. Most often, cigar smokers will prefer to use a butane torch lighter to get their cigar burning. These lighter's use of butane ensures that there is no chemical taste imparted to the cigar. Butane burns remarkably clean and leaves virtually no residue behind. It certainly leaves no taste.

There are some smokers who prefer to use a combination of wooden matches and cedar strips to light their cigars. While this may score some style points, it is much less efficient than using a lighter. The matches, of course, are subject to wind and moisture as are the cedar strips. Carrying these items around is a much bigger hassle than simply putting a lighter in one's pocket, as well. This method has one other significant drawback.

Cigar lighters often have attached to them clipper devices. This eliminates the need to carry around several different smoking implements. Butane lighters are easily refilled and actually offer more lights per filling than do their liquid-fueled competitors. For all of these reasons, most cigar smokers vastly prefer the butane torch lighter over their other options. The cedar strip and match method may be appealing in a nostalgic sense, but that is sometimes outdone by the technological advantages of a butane lighter.
