Using reward stickers as a way of showing individual attention to pupils

It has been increasingly noted amongst educationalists that any challenges involving

low attainment or misbehaviour among younger children are best addressed by discussing the issues in a private one-to-one session. Smart schools have also discovered that this emphasis on individual attention can also be bolstered through the use of individual rewards.

Individual rewards for younger pupils do not necessarily need to have intrinsic value or be made available only to a chosen elite in order to be valued by the pupils concerned. On the contrary, choosing a reward that appeals to materialistic impulses has the danger of shifting pupils' attention away from the reason why the reward was being offered in the first place. Likewise, too great an emphasis on competition between pupils can again detract from the original purpose of the reward and may even lead to resentment, thus making any original problem worse.

Many schools have found that using a carefully controlled distribution system of bright, modern-looking stickers, certificates and rubber stamps, is more than adequate to make a child feel special and thus help encourage desired work achievements or behaviour. What is more, even when things do not quite go to plan, genuine effort can still be rewarded in the form of well tried' stickers, thus preventing a pupil from becoming overly discouraged.

Some schools have also found that reward stickers, certificates and rubber stamps also help in one particular area where conventional verbal reminders usually prove fruitless: a pupil's underlying social attitudes. Stickers, for example, that congratulate a pupil for showing consideration to others, often have a positive reinforcement that works far more effectively than a prior warning or a post-act reprimand.
