Utilize Sunscreen To Protect Your Skin From Harmful Sun Rays

In America, a person dies of malignant melanoma every hour

, and has a 40-50% chance of developing at least one basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma if he or she lives to the age of 65. Each year more research finds that there are new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. Most skin cancers are sun-related, which is why Dr. Ring constantly educates her patients about cancer prevention and what is fact vs. fiction regarding sunscreen usage, safety and selection. The fact is, there is no such thing as a healthy tan (unless it comes from a bottle or spray).

Ultraviolet Rays

Simply by walking to your car in an uncovered parking lot-whether it is cold or cloudy-you can get a significant amount of sun exposure. Wearing sunscreen just "when you go out," is also a very inadequate way to care for your skin and prevent again and skin cancer.

You are exposed to a significant amount of ultraviolet A from the sun by simply sitting next to a window. Ultraviolet A (UVA) does not produce sunburn, but it can penetrate window glass and does contribute to the development of skin cancer and aging of the skin. Additionally, ultraviolet B (UVB) is the wavelength of light from the sun that causes sunburn. Previously, doctors thought that people obtained most of their sun exposure by the time they turned 18, but we now know that simply isn't true. Adopting a lifestyle of daily sunscreen usage in adulthood can help decrease the incidence of skin cancer and aging.

Understanding Sunscreen Terminology

When it comes to protecting your skin, it is important to understand the terminology involved with sunscreen. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is a measure of protection against ultraviolet B and sunburn. Just selecting a sunscreen with a high SFT (30 or higher) might decrease the likelihood of sunburn, but SPF alone does not measure protective against the wavelength, UVA that contributes to skin cancer and again.

Only the term "Broad Spectrum" refer to protection against UVA light. However, "Broad Spectrum" is not a measure. Rather, the term on the label just means the sunscreen does provide some protection against UVA damage. On the other hand, Zinc Oxide provides the most effective broad-spectrum protection of any sunscreen ingredient because it contains the complete UVB/UVA spectrum. The second best protection would be from a combination of Titanium Dioxide in combination with Avobenzone. A measure, the term on the label, just means the sunscreen does have protection against UVA damage. Zinc Oxide provides the most effective broad-spectrum protection of any other sunscreen ingredient with the second best protection being from a combination of Titanium Dioxide in combination with Avobenzone.

Practice Proper Daily Skin care

Daily use, as directed, of a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater can help prevent skin cancer and aging if it is used along with other sun protective practices. Some sun-protective practices include the following:

*Limiting time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10AM and 2 PM when the sun's rays are the strongest.

*Wearing clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun (long-sleeved shirts, pants, sunglasses, and broad-brimmed hats) when possible,

*Using a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating.

*Reapplying sunscreen, even if it is labeled as water resistant, at least every 2 hours. (Water resistant sunscreens should be applied more often after swimming or sweating, according to the directions on the label.)

*Do not use tanning booths. Avoid tanning of any kind (except artificial tans that are applied to the skin as a stain)

Your dermatologist in Bridgeton, MO frequently has a preselected variety of sunscreens available in the office OR you can check the Skin Cancer Foundation or the American Academy of Dermatology websites for more information/recommendations.
