Utlizing Classrooms for Diversity Training

Diversity training in the workplace has undergone much scrutiny over the years. People tend to view it as a waste of time and money. They feel as though they're well-versed in diversity by now, and don't want to be treated like a room full of bigots. Well, they might not be bigots, but well-versed can be a stretch. Occasionally, a diversity training program manages to get sued for some sort of "unfair" treatment. When a program teaching diversity gets sued for harassment, something isn't right. The best way to get a handle on these workplace classrooms is to do the diversity training in the actual classroom. It takes more than a few hour-long sessions with 30-year-olds to implement a strong sense of diversity. So, here are a few tips to enhance diversity training in the actual classroom.

Start early

It's never too early to teach a child about the world around them. Take advantage of a child's eagerness to learn how to read. There are a number of books for children that present lessons on diversity guised as an engaging story. Now, you're killing two birds with one stone.

Utilize the curriculum

Take a look at what's being covered in the classroom, and try to incorporate diversity into the lesson plan. And, this doesn't have to be as overbearing as it may seem. In English class, use classics like Huckleberry Finn, or move on to modern pieces like Freedom Writers. In Social Studies, encourage projects that focus on cultures outside of America. Have students bring in a dish from another country, or do a life-in-the-day presentation of that culture.

Cover it all

Diversity extends much further than black-and-white differences in America. Discuss gender, sex, race, religion, and sexual orientation as well. Offer up famous individuals who represent these differences. By providing children with something to relate to, it will induce a more family-like atmosphere, which is essentially the goal of any diversity training program.

Take it out of the classroom

Kids, or anyone for that matter, love field trips, so use that to your advantage. As with anything else taught in the classroom, real-life experience will help solidify what you teach. For example, if you're close to New York, a trip to the United Nations could be eye-opening for students.

Pass it on

As the world evolves, so do people. More differences are on the horizon. Children's book publishers are continually updating their repertoire to incorporate everyone. So, keep in touch with the world around you, and continue to encourage a life-long diversity training program.
