Vacation Tips For Killarney, Ireland

Ready to leave your comfortable rooms at the Brehon Hotel Killarney

? You'll find that there's plenty to see and do while you're enjoying your time in Killarney, Ireland. And if you love the outdoors, you're in for a treat. Why not spend a day (or more!) at the 26,000 acre Killarney National Park, the oldest and grandest national park in Ireland?

This rugged mountainous countryside includes the McGillycuddy's Reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland. And at the foot of the mountains you'll find the glimmering waters of the world famous lakes of Killarney. The panoramic combination of craggy mountains, shimmering lakes, shady woods and sparkling waterfalls under ever changing Irish skies gives the area a special scenic beauty that you'll find nowhere else.

Killarney National Park contains many natural features that are recognized both nationally and internationally for their ecological importance. Among these are the beautiful native oakwoods and the yew woods, as well as a wide variety of evergreen trees, shrubs, bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) and lichens which thrive in the mild climate found in the Killarney area. And the plants aren't the only attraction. The native red deer you'll see here have been in this area since the last Ice Age, and they are unique in Ireland.

Not surprisingly given its amazing biodiversity, Killarney National Park was designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 1981 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). It's now part of a world network of natural areas which are focused on conservation, research, education and training as major objectives. In fact, the former Kenmare Desmene, which is part of the National Park, features Killarney House and Gardens and Knockreer House which is the education centre of the park.

The heart of the Killarney National Park is the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park. This section of the park was presented to the Irish government back in 1932 by Senator Arthur Vincent and his parents-in-law, Mr and Mrs William Bowers Bourn as a loving memorium to Senator Vincent's late wife Maud Bourne Vincent.

For most visitors, however, the primary must-see site in Killarney National Park is Muckross House and Gardens which are jointly managed by the Park Authorities and the Trustees of Muckross House. Built in 1839, the house is preserved as a late 19th century mansion and it includes all the authentic furnishings from that time for visitors to enjoy. The extensive gardens surrounding the house were mainly developed in the 1850's in preparation for a visit from Queen Victoria in 1861 and include a Victorian Walled Garden, a mid 19th century parterre*, and recently restored Edwardian Glasshouses.

Need some more ideas of things to do in the Killarney National Park?

Why not check out Innisfallen Island? Getting there is easy - just take a boat from Ross Castle. You can arrange your island adventure for a few hours or a whole day, depending on your schedule.

Want to see the red deer? Take a comfortable walk along the trail of the ancient Bronze Mines, and keep your eyes open. Even if you don't see any deer, there's plenty of natural scenery to enjoy.

Or just wander peacefully along the river and feel yourself relax and unwind in the calming natural surroundings.

No matter what you choose to see, you'll find that the Killarney National Park is a great day-trip that you won't want to miss while you're staying at the Brehon Hotel Killarney.
