Vacationing In Michigan
When thinking about Michigan, the first things that come to mind are the Great Lakes
, including Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior. These massive bodies of water are so big that they are known as "freshwater seas."
The Great Lakes are said to contain an estimated 6 quadrillion gallons of fresh water. This is 95% of the United States' fresh water supply, and one-fifth of the world's supply. The Lakes cover over 94,000 square miles with water; they are gigantic.
The lakes are so popular with tourists that, alone, they generate billions of dollars every year for the state. People can enjoy many uses of the lakes for recreational purposes.
Many people enjoy hanging out on the beaches of these freshwater seas, sunbathing and playing in the water. Though some areas of these lakes are closed to the public because of contamination issues, most of the water is still accessible for recreation.
There are many opportunities to go fishing in the Great Lakes; together, they offer over 150 different species in the water. People can fish off of the many docks that circle the coastline of the state; or they can charter a boat or take their own to take them out if they want to catch the bigger fish in deeper water.
People enjoy swimming in the Great Lakes because they are fresh water and largeness of it. Because the lakes are so large, people can also take out their boats in designated areas. People enjoy wakeboarding, water skiing, water tubing, jet skiing, and just speed boating in general.
They size of the lakes allow for many people to be out on the water and have it still not be congested or crowded, allowing everyone to enjoy their time and have lots of space. Other popular water sports are paddle boarding and wind surfing. Both use larger versions of surf-boards, but do not require any waves to ride them.
Instead, for paddle-boarding, you stand on the board and paddle with an oar, and that allows you to go anywhere you want on the water without waves knocking you down. With wind-surfing, you have a mini sail on your board, and you stand on the board and allow the wind to move you across the water. Both activities are very popular for people who live near or visit the Great Lakes.
There are also many different national parks in Michigan that you can visit. One of the most popular is the Isle Royale National Park. As its name suggests, it is an island national park, and is located in Lake Superior.
Isle Royale National Park offers tourists wildlife that included wolves and moose. It also has the wild North Woods forest and the crystal clear waters and rugged shoreline of Lake Superior. The park encompasses a total area of 850 square miles including submerged lands which extends four and a half miles out into Lake Superior.
Another national park in the state of Michigan is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This is a 35 mile long stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou Islands. The park has many beautiful natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations, and ancient glacial phenomena.
The various natural glories of this park attract many tourists and locals to this park daily. The Lakeshore also contains many cultural features including an old lighthouse, three former Life-Saving Service/Coast Guard Stations and an extensive rural historic farming district.
One of the most popular spots in the state is the town of Ann Arbor. This is where the University of Michigan Wolverines campus is located. This area attracts many younger people because of its college town atmosphere, but everyone who visits falls in love with the local vibe.
Ann Arbor offers a wide range of restaurants that offer everything from world cuisines to local favorites. The town also supports the love for a broad array of arts, culture and world-class entertainment.
You don't have to go far to find adventure or a relaxing getaway, Michigan is a beautiful place to visit, and offers a vast array of activities that you and your family can enjoy.
