Valencia Cathedral

The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishops of Valencia and is brimming with religious artefacts and treasures, including one of the remaining chalices of the Holy Grail.

The cathedral was built between the 12th and 15th centuries and was dedicated to the Holy Saviour. In 1262 the first cornerstone was laid by the then Bishop; the gothic structure was not finally finished until 1482, but the finished cathedral was and still is a grandiose examples of gothic architecture; with its impressive chapter hall, and the famous La Miguelete Tower, which was added by Jaime of Aragn.

During the 15th century the dome was added and in the late 1600s the Archbishop Luis Alfonso de los Cameros began building the main chapel, which was decorated in an ornate and extravagant style, typical of this period.

The interior of Valencia Cathedral is essentially gothic and houses some important artworks, including two Goya paintings, the Santo Caliz, a chalice said to be the Holy Grail, although the Vatican has not officially affirmed this. There are also an interesting collection of paintings, a 2300kg gold, silver and jewel monstrance, which was donated by the city dwellers of Valencia and is carried through the streets of the city on festival days.

Additionally the faade is essentially Gothic, although the open arches which run along the north lateral appear Roman in style, almost like the Colloseum in Rome. The baroque-style entrance known as the Puerta de los Apstles is lavishly decorated with Gothic sculpture and a 14th century rose window.

Entrance to the cathedral is free, although there is a minimal charge to climb the La Miguelete Tower and enter the Cathedral's museum. Opening times are 7.30am-1pm and 4.30pm-8.30pm daily.
