Values-Source Of Illumination
Value is derived from French word valor' which means worth, merit, usefulness or importance of thing. Value concepts are more realistic than absolute. For e.g. "face of your worst enemy might be the face of my best friend"
Value helps you to distinguish:
Good from bad,
Right from wrong,
Will from ill,
Action from reaction.
Values are standard of behavior of a being. Values bring transparency in your deeds. Values acts as a source of momentous energy especially when you find yourself fix in deep dark circumstances. Values are concerned with human conduct. Human conduct should be based on following adage:
"Conduct not as it is, but conduct as it ought to be"!
Values are not something indigenous in nature but this is an evolutionary process. I do not mean that you can develop values with experience but your values make it possible for you to handle pity or gargantuan matters with experienced view. One thing I want to make clear to you is that without sound values you are not able to judge anything for eg: the appeal of flower say rose whose value is in its contradiction as
" So delicate in form yet strong in fragrance,
So small in size yet big in beauty,
So short in life yet prolong on effect "
The person who always concentrates only on first four words of above lines (underline text), it means that person has nature of down wings
but if person notice or concentrate only last 4 words on right part of same lines (italic text) it means that person has zeal in him to know how beautiful a life is.
Values are categorized as social, moral, individual & cultural and the blend of all these comes under context of "Human Values". Human values are responsible to "Make & Maintain" relationships (Humane relationships to be more precise).
For e.g. If you are the HR manager & an employee comes to you with a problem. Unless you put yourself in his shoes & try to view the problem in right context rather to see a problem with a bossy nature, you can't be able to solve his problem. In order to satisfy your employee (as employees are one of the biggest asset for any organization), you have to go by empathetic view with conscience.
But these days our society, values are deteriorating rapidly.Consider following example
A survey was conducted in 29 Indian states about "Indian Families & Relationship" in 2006 .It was found that 37% of married women were abused by their husband or in-laws. This is a perfect example of falling values.
So if you want to upgrade your society you have to upgrade the values you have. You know a valued person always upgrade himself from "thick sheet of thin things". If a manager adopts a particular leadership style which is contrary to value orientation of organistion, there is bound to be an organizational conflict.
Biggest challenge in front of a valued person in this world is "to become yourself where everyone is trying to make you somebody "
Human values are further divided into two
Instrumental & Terminal Values
Instrumental values:These values are derivative
Assertiveness
Hard work
Truthfulness
Open mindedness
Terminal values: These values are resultant
Satisfaction
Recognition
Security
Pride in accomplishment
An instrumental value comes into play when a person heads his efforts for doing any work. A terminal value comes into play when a person expectation comes after completition of a work.
Values are must for today's organizations. It makes strong organizational culture. Its good example is "ITC limited" when ever you buy its products viz notebooks, wheat etc some part of their profit goes for education of children in rural areas.
I want to conclude with a line that
"values instill a sense of humanity into all aspects of our life"
