I always read the post from top to bottom to make sure it is a solid post, and not some junk. It its junk content, don't link to it. It will make you look bad even if you do get a back-link out of it.
After determining if the content is grammatically correct, structured well and reads good. Take a few minutes and create your own summary of the post with your opinions or solutions. Once you have contributed a well structured message that is useful and pertains to the post. You are now granted permission to leave your link. This is how you should build back-links. I do about 5 a day. That way im not spamming, and I cant read more than 5 articles a day anyway.
Before you post your link though, think about this for a minute. We need to replicate what happens naturally from your websites longevity.
