Oriental area rugs: The term Oriental actually refers to China but in the world of rugs, Oriental also refers to rugs which are made in other parts of Asia like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tibet etc. It also refers to rugs from Eurasia, as well as several parts of Middle East. When it comes to rug making, Oriental rugs are the finest rugs all over the world. These rugs are very intricate and rich in color with elaborate designs. There are several Oriental area rugs available in the market which can be used for wall to wall installation. However, these rugs can be really expensive and if they are handwoven, they become extremely expensive.

Persian rugs: There is no point mentioning this separately because Persian Rugs are variations of Oriental rugs which are made in the Middle East. It is being mentioned separately because Persian rugs are the finest of all variants of Oriental rugs and their color, material, impeccable craftsmanship make them unique. They are expensive and they work well as heirlooms. However, when Persian rugs are used as area rugs at home, special care must be taken to ensure that the piece of art remains intact.

Hand knotted rugs: These rugs can be really really expensive. These are generally hand woven and are extremely labor intensive. The number of knots woven per square inch of the rug will determine the quality and the durability of the rug. In general 160 knots is good. 600 knots exquisite art work and those with 1000 knots are rare stuff. The hand knotted rugs are always exclusive in nature and a second one with same design is never woven. It is because of this reason, hand knotted rugs are rare and expensive. So, if you are using a hand knotted area rug, you need to make sure that the rug is properly maintained. Remember that it is one of its kind and hence it must be properly maintained.

Braided rugs: These rugs are generally made of wool. However, silk and cotton can also be used. Olefin and nylon, which are manmade materials are also used for the creation of braided rugs. These rugs are made using fabric strips. These strips are braided to make ropes and then they are woven into beautiful patterns. These rugs durable and can be cleaned easily. They can be used for both indoor and outdoor decoration.

Natural rugs: Made out of materials like jute, sisal, sea grass or mountain grass, these natural rugs are extremely durable and can be cleaned easily. They are also cheap compared to rugs made of cotton, wool, etc.
